About the treatment

Understanding Dermaplaning

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a professional manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile blade to carefully remove dull surface cells and fine vellus hair, commonly known as peach fuzz. It creates a smoother skin surface and leaves the complexion looking fresher, softer and more refined.

How Does It Work?

The skin is held securely while the blade is passed across the treatment area using controlled, precise strokes. This lifts away surface build-up and temporarily removes fine facial hair without changing the structure of the hair follicle or treating deeper layers of the skin.

Treatment benefits

Dermaplaning

Smooths Uneven Skin Texture

Removing compacted surface build-up helps rough-feeling areas feel softer, smoother and more polished.

Brightens Dull-Looking Skin

Lifting away dull surface cells can leave the complexion looking fresher, clearer and more radiant.

Temporarily Removes Fine Facial Hair

Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair from the skin’s surface, creating a cleaner and more refined-looking finish.

Creates a Smoother Base for Makeup

Removing surface build-up and fine hair can help foundation and complexion products apply more smoothly and evenly.

Softens the Appearance of Fine Surface Lines

Smoothing the outermost surface can make very fine, superficial lines appear softer and less noticeable.

Refreshes Dry or Rough-Looking Skin

Controlled surface exfoliation helps improve the appearance of dry, flaky or rough texture without using abrasive particles or a chemical peel.

Personalised and considered

Suitability & Safety

Not all conditions that may affect treatment suitability are listed here. Your safety, skin health and long-term results will always come first.

Treatment may need to be adapted, postponed or declined if you have:

Active Acne, Infection or Cold Sores

Dermaplaning should not be performed over painful or inflamed breakouts, active cold sores, infection, open wounds, sunburn or broken skin in the treatment area.

Active Skin Conditions or Significant Sensitivity

A flare of eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea or another inflammatory skin condition may make treatment unsuitable until the skin has settled.

Retinoids, Isotretinoin or Sensitising Medication

Prescription retinoids, recent isotretinoin use and medication or skincare that affects sensitivity, healing or skin integrity must be disclosed before treatment.

Recent Exfoliation, Hair Removal or Advanced Treatments

Recent waxing, threading, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, laser treatment, injectables or surgery may require the appointment to be delayed.

Bleeding, Scarring or Healing Concerns

Blood-thinning medication, bleeding conditions, uncontrolled diabetes, poor wound healing or a history of raised or abnormal scarring may affect suitability.

Moles, Raised Lesions and Individual Considerations

Raised moles, skin tags, unexplained lesions or areas that have recently changed, bled or become irritated must be avoided and may require medical assessment. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies and relevant health changes must also be disclosed so that the appointment and products can be adapted where necessary.

Your appointment

What to Expect

Consultation & Skin Assessment

Your concerns, current skincare routine, medical history, medication, recent treatments and previous reactions are reviewed. Your skin condition, barrier health and overall suitability are assessed before treatment begins.

Cleanse & Prepare

The skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared to remove makeup, surface oils and residue. Areas requiring additional care or avoidance are identified before the blade is opened.

Controlled Dermaplaning

Using a professional sterile blade, the skin is held securely while controlled strokes remove surface build-up and fine vellus hair. The technique is adapted according to the treatment area and your individual skin response.

Calm, Hydrate & Protect

Following dermaplaning, suitable calming and hydrating products are applied alongside sun protection. You will receive personalised aftercare and guidance on when to resume your usual skincare routine.

After your appointment

Results & Recovery

Immediately After Treatment

The skin may feel noticeably smoother and look brighter immediately after treatment. Temporary pinkness, tightness, warmth or mild sensitivity may also occur.

During the Following Days

Any mild redness or sensitivity should gradually settle. Some clients may experience temporary dryness, minor congestion or small surface breakouts as the skin adjusts.

Visible Results

The complexion may appear smoother, softer and more refined, with fine facial hair temporarily removed. Results vary according to your skin condition, hair growth and individual response.

Ongoing Maintenance

Dermaplaning provides temporary surface results rather than permanent hair removal or deep skin correction. Repeat appointments can be arranged once the skin has fully settled and where continued treatment remains suitable.

Supporting your skin

Post-Treatment Care

Keep Your Routine Gentle

Use a mild cleanser, simple moisturiser and only the products recommended for you while the skin is settling. Avoid harsh cleansing, scrubbing or rubbing.

Protect Your Skin From UV

Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, limit direct sun exposure and avoid tanning beds. Freshly exfoliated skin may temporarily feel more sensitive to sunlight.

Pause Active Skincare

Do not restart retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide or other strong active products until the skin has settled and you have been advised that it is appropriate.

Avoid Excess Heat, Sweat & Friction

For the advised period, avoid saunas, steam rooms, very hot showers, intense exercise and anything that causes excessive heat, sweating or rubbing against the treated skin.

Do Not Exfoliate, Pick or Shave

Avoid scrubs, exfoliating tools, facial razors and further hair removal while the skin is recovering. Do not pick at any temporary dryness or irritation.

Follow Makeup & Treatment Guidance

Wait until advised before applying makeup, waxing, threading or booking another exfoliating or advanced skin treatment. Contact HEXIE Beauty if you experience unexpected pain, blistering, persistent bleeding, marked swelling or worsening irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a professional manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile blade to remove dull surface cells and fine vellus hair from the face. It creates a smoother surface and leaves the complexion looking brighter, softer and more refined.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

Dermaplaning is not usually considered painful. Most clients experience a light scraping or brushing sensation as the blade moves across the skin. The treatment is adapted according to your skin and comfort.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. Dermaplaning removes hair above the skin’s surface and does not change the hair follicle, growth rate, colour or natural thickness. The hair may briefly feel more noticeable as the blunt edge grows through, but it will retain its original characteristics.

How much downtime should I expect?

Most clients experience little to no formal downtime. Temporary pinkness, tightness, warmth or sensitivity may occur for a day or two depending on your skin and the intensity of treatment.

How should I prepare for dermaplaning?

You may be advised to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids or other strong active products before your appointment. Avoid excessive sun exposure and disclose all medications, active breakouts, cold sores, allergies, recent treatments and previous skin reactions.

Can dermaplaning treat acne scarring?

Dermaplaning may soften the appearance of very superficial texture by smoothing the skin’s outer surface, but it is not intended to correct deep, pitted or raised acne scars. A different treatment may be recommended for established scarring.

Can I have dermaplaning if I have active acne?

Dermaplaning should not be carried out over active, inflamed or painful acne because the blade may irritate affected areas and increase the risk of spreading bacteria. Treatment may be postponed or a more appropriate alternative recommended.

Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?

You will be advised when it is appropriate to apply makeup based on your skin response. Allowing the freshly exfoliated skin time to settle and using clean, non-irritating products can help reduce unnecessary sensitivity.

Is dermaplaning suitable for all skin tones?

Dermaplaning can be considered for a wide range of skin tones because it is a superficial manual treatment. The technique and aftercare must still be personalised, particularly where the skin is sensitive or prone to developing dark marks after irritation.

Can dermaplaning be combined with another treatment?

Dermaplaning may form part of a wider personalised facial or skin plan, but combining exfoliating treatments can increase sensitivity. Any additional treatment will only be included where it is appropriate for your skin and supported by the relevant professional protocol.
