About the treatment

Understanding Microdermabrasion

What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a professional mechanical exfoliation treatment that uses a specialised handpiece to gently remove dull, compacted cells from the outermost surface of the skin. It is designed to leave the complexion looking smoother, brighter and more refined without the depth or recovery associated with more intensive resurfacing treatments.

How Does It Work?

The handpiece is passed methodically across the skin, combining controlled exfoliation with suction to lift away surface debris and dead skin cells. The treatment intensity and number of passes are adjusted according to your skin condition, concerns and tolerance, helping to refine texture, congestion and overall skin clarity.

Treatment benefits

Microdermabrasion

Brightens dull-looking skin

Removes surface build-up that can leave the complexion looking tired, uneven or lacklustre.

Smooths uneven skin texture

Helps refine rough-feeling areas and leaves the skin’s surface feeling softer and more polished.

Refines the appearance of enlarged pores

Helps clear surface debris and congestion, leaving visible pores looking cleaner and more refined.

Supports clearer-looking skin

Controlled exfoliation can help improve the appearance of surface congestion, blackheads and blemish-prone skin.

Softens the appearance of fine lines

Helps smooth the outer surface of the skin, making early fine lines appear less noticeable.

Improves the appearance of uneven tone

Regular exfoliation can support a brighter, more even-looking complexion and soften the appearance of superficial post-blemish marks.

Personalised and considered

Suitability & Safety

Not all conditions that may affect treatment suitability are listed here. Your safety, skin health and long-term results will always come first.

Treatment may need to be adapted, postponed or declined if you have:

Active infection, cold sores or broken skin

Treatment must be postponed where there are active cold sores, skin infection, open wounds, sunburn, bleeding or broken skin in the treatment area.

Inflamed acne or active skin conditions

Painful or inflamed breakouts and active flares of eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis may make microdermabrasion unsuitable until the skin has settled.

Rosacea, visible capillaries or highly reactive skin

Significant redness, rosacea, fragile capillaries or easily sensitised skin may require the treatment to be adapted or replaced with a gentler alternative.

Medication and active skincare

Isotretinoin, prescription acne medication, retinoids, exfoliating acids and other products that affect skin sensitivity must be disclosed and may need to be stopped for the advised period.

Recent treatments or hair removal

Recent waxing, threading, peels, microneedling, laser treatment, injectables, surgery or other advanced procedures may require the appointment to be delayed.

Scarring, allergies and changing skin lesions

A history of abnormal scarring, previous adverse reactions, allergies to treatment materials or any mole, lesion or growth that has changed, bled or become concerning must be disclosed before treatment.

Your appointment

What to Expect

Consultation & Skin Assessment

Your concerns, current skincare routine, medical history, medications, recent treatments and previous reactions are reviewed. Your skin condition, barrier health and overall suitability are assessed before treatment begins.

Cleanse & Prepare

The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove makeup, surface oils and residue. The treatment intensity, handpiece setting and areas requiring additional care are selected following assessment.

Controlled Microdermabrasion

The handpiece is passed methodically across the treatment area using controlled exfoliation and suction. The number of passes and intensity are adjusted according to your skin condition, concerns and individual response.

Calm, Hydrate & Protect

Any remaining surface debris is removed before calming, hydrating products and sun protection are applied. You will receive personalised aftercare and guidance on any recommended treatment course.

After your appointment

Results & Recovery

Immediately After Treatment

The skin may appear slightly pink and feel smoother, tighter or more sensitive immediately after treatment. Mild warmth, tenderness or temporary pinpoint redness may also occur.

During the Following Days

Any redness or sensitivity usually settles within the first day or two. Temporary dryness, light flaking, mild swelling or occasional bruising may occur depending on the treatment intensity and individual skin response.

Visible Improvements

The complexion may appear smoother, brighter and more refined following treatment. Improvements in texture, visible pores, fine lines and uneven tone usually develop gradually and vary between individuals.

Recommended Course & Maintenance

Some clients choose an occasional treatment for surface refreshment, while others may benefit from a personalised course. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to help retain a smoother and more radiant-looking complexion.

Supporting your skin

Post-Treatment Care

Keep Your Routine Gentle

Use a mild cleanser, simple moisturiser and only the products recommended for you while the skin is settling. Avoid scrubs, cleansing brushes and additional exfoliation.

Protect Your Skin From UV

Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, limit direct sun exposure and avoid tanning beds. The freshly exfoliated skin may be more sensitive to sunlight for several days.

Pause Active Skincare

Do not restart retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide or other strong active products until the skin has settled and you have been advised that it is appropriate.

Avoid Excess Heat, Sweat & Friction

For the advised period, avoid saunas, steam rooms, very hot showers, intense exercise and anything that causes excessive heat, sweating or rubbing against the treated skin.

Do Not Pick or Over-Exfoliate

Allow any temporary dryness or light flaking to settle naturally. Picking, rubbing or using another exfoliating treatment too soon may increase irritation.

Follow Makeup & Treatment Guidance

Wait until advised before applying makeup, waxing, threading or booking another advanced skin treatment. Contact HEXIE Beauty if you experience unexpected pain, blistering, prolonged swelling, bleeding or worsening irritation.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a professional mechanical exfoliation treatment that uses a specialised handpiece to remove dull surface cells and debris from the outermost layer of the skin. It is designed to leave the complexion looking smoother, brighter and more refined.

How is microdermabrasion different from dermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle, superficial and non-surgical treatment that works on the outermost surface of the skin. Dermabrasion is a considerably deeper and more intensive medical resurfacing procedure with greater recovery requirements.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion is not usually considered painful. You may feel a mild scratching, vibrating or suction sensation as the handpiece moves across the skin. The intensity is adjusted according to your skin and tolerance.

How much downtime should I expect?

Most clients experience little to no formal downtime. Temporary redness, tightness, sensitivity, dryness or mild swelling may occur and usually settles within 24-48 hours.

Can microdermabrasion improve acne scarring?

Microdermabrasion is a superficial treatment and is not intended to correct deep or established acne scars. It may help improve surface roughness, uneven tone and post-blemish marks, but deeper scarring may require a different treatment approach.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

You may be advised to pause retinoids, exfoliating acids or other strong active products before your appointment. Avoid excessive sun exposure and disclose all medications, acne treatments, recent procedures, cold-sore history, allergies and previous skin reactions.

When will I see results?

The skin often feels smoother and looks fresher shortly after treatment. More noticeable improvements in texture, visible pores, fine lines and uneven tone generally build gradually across a personalised course.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on your skin, concerns and goals. A single treatment may provide a temporary surface refresh, while concerns such as uneven texture, congestion or fine lines may benefit from a personalised course followed by maintenance.

Can I wear makeup after microdermabrasion?

You will be advised when it is appropriate to apply makeup based on your skin response. Where possible, allow the freshly exfoliated skin time to settle and avoid applying heavy or irritating products immediately after treatment.

Is microdermabrasion suitable for all skin tones?

Microdermabrasion can be considered for a wide range of skin tones because it is a superficial mechanical treatment. The intensity and aftercare must still be personalised, particularly where the skin is sensitive or prone to developing dark marks after irritation.
